Infrastructure Security and Defense (ISD)

ISD focuses on improved design and construction of secured facilities and protective structures using cost-effective modular design and construction techniques. ISD solutions reduce the construction duration and field labor requirements while delivering superior structural performance through higher strength and ductility.

Our structures also provide built-in electromagnetic pulse/high-altitude nuclear explosion and compromising electromagnetic emissions protection without additional construction steps. Our engineering services and technology solutions are ideal for government agencies, military bases, embassies, nuclear power plants and other high-risk facilities that need protection against blast or missile impact loads.

Specific services and solutions include:

Secured and mission-critical facilities

  • Delay and denial features (internal or security perimeter)
  • Protective structures
  • Hardened structures for resisting missile and external blast loads
  • Energetic chambers for handling internal blast loads
  • Blast doors that are strong and easy-to-install and operate

Enhanced safety at public facilities

  • Fixed or portable chambers for safe disposal of suspected explosive packages

Nuclear Infrastructure Division (NID)

Our NID team provides comprehensive structural engineering and construction related solutions for advanced light-water reactors (Gen III+), small modular reactors, advanced reactors (Gen IV) and microreactors. We develop reactor-specific and reactor-agnostic innovative solutions and perform the necessary research and development, especially in modular steel-plate composite construction and seismic isolation. This helps minimize overall plant costs and reduce the construction duration and field labor requirements.

We work with our clients to provide the following services:

  • Perform preconstruction reviews to assess constructability issues and suggest improvement needs
  • Perform in-process design reviews and assessments to improve outcomes in regulatory acceptance; make as-needed technical representations to regulators, including requests for additional information
  • Collaboratively determine needs for research and testing and high-end computational simulations
  • Perform evaluations to demonstrate performance against beyond-design-basis loads
  • Explore and develop construction and structural solutions related to energy storage methods, co-generation and storage of hydrogen, data center facilities, etc.

Bridge and Transportation Infrastructure Division (BTID)

BTID is founded on decades of real-world experience. Our team employs innovative engineering, testing and design practices to support new projects and determine end-of-life extensions to critical aging transportation assets within the United States.

The tremendous impact and lack of redundancy in transportation systems has been highlighted time and again when structures are suddenly taken out of service because of fire, impact or deterioration. Minimizing the likelihood of such events, prioritizing risk and quickly developing effective solutions are strengths of the team. Our experts are passionate about implementing the latest research to solve individual or system-level problems in a way that is balanced with tried-and-true practices to ensure the most reliable long-term solutions.

Infrastructure Finance Division (IFD)

IFD supports U.S. initiatives for energy security through creating innovative economic practices and standards. Our team formulates advanced energy deployment strategies with minimum federal or state subsidies. IFD resources include Purdue University, key industry partners and experienced staff with more than 25 years of industrial development and energy finance experience.

IFD has forged key industry alliances that allow our team exclusive access to industrial power users (off-take partners) and specialized finance opportunities that support deployment of advanced energy technology, including small modular and micro reactors. IFD’s clients include energy developers, utilities, municipalities, constructors, educational institutions and original equipment manufacturers.
